America's Universities are becoming Whiter and more Elitist
The USA Today has an article that should shock no one about the demographic composition of American universities.
In a follow up to their 2006 study on the demographics of 50 leading American public universities, the non-profit organization Education Trust has found that these so-called flagship universities "'continue to enroll students who are far richer and far whiter' than most in their states."
Surprise. Surprise.
The article comments that "The entering and graduating classes at many of the nation's leading public universities are looking less and less like the state populations they were founded to serve."
This is the broader context to the rise in tuition costs at California's universities and the subsequent recent protests.
Speaking of which, two University of California-Berkeley students have been suspended for protesting budget cuts outside UCB Chancellor Robert Birgeneau’s home in December.
Believe it or not, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger even denounced these protests as a "type of terrorism."
